Football duo, women's soccer standout split award

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts football graduate student middle linebacker Bryton Barr and redshirt junior quarterback Michael Curtis and women's soccer sophomore forward Kelly Marra share the Dinn Brothers UMass Student-Athlete of the Week Award, as announced by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee on Tuesday. Barr, Curtis and Marra will be recognized at the Wed., Sept. 26 UMass Sports Luncheon, hosted at the Berkshire Dining Common from Noon - 1 p.m.

Barr posted 21 tackles, including 4.0 TFLs for 19 yards lost, as Massachusetts downed Charlotte, 49-31 at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Sat., Sept. 22. It marked the most stops in Barr's career and the first outing of 20 or more by a Minuteman since Jovan Santos-Knox posted 20 against No. 19 Toledo on Oct. 24, 2015. Barr ranks as the nation's leading tackler through games played on Sat., Sept. 22 in total tackles (71) and tackles per game (14.2).

Curtis was promoted into the starting quarterback role following injuries to Andrew Ford and Ross Comis and went 12-of-19 for 189 passing yards and two touchdowns thrown while he added 35 yards rushing on nine carries, including two for scores, in the win over Charlotte. He factored into four of the team's opening six touchdown plays as Massachusetts jetted to a 42-10 lead halfway through the third quarter. He is the first UMass quarterback with two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs in the same game since Todd Bankhead accomplished the feat against Northwestern State in the NCAA I-AA Semifinal Round on Dec. 12, 1998.

Marra helped UMass post a 2-0 start to Atlantic 10 play as the Minutewomen opened the league schedule with a 2-0 win over Duquesne and a 1-0 road victory at Rhode Island. The sophomore scored the game-winning goal at Rhode Island on her only shot of the weekend. She played a total of 76 minutes as a reserve in the two matches. The deciding goal marked the fourth game-winner of her career and she now as a career-best four total goals this season. Marra's goal against the Rams came in the 73rd minute on a corner kick just 29 seconds after she had returned to the match.

The UMass Sports Luncheon is open to all and features an $11.50 lunch prepared by the Princeton Review No. 1-rated college dining service in the nation.

The event's scheduled speakers include head football coach Mark Whipple and Daily Hampshire Gazette reporter Josh Walfish.
