Minutewomen Close Preseason With 4-1 Exhibition Win Over Holy Cross

August 19, 2018 | Field Hockey

Cooper and Louw carry Massachusetts offense in victory

WORCESTER, Mass. – Behind two goals apiece from sophomore Lucy Cooper and junior Antonet Louw, University of Massachusetts field hockey secured a 4-1 win over Holy Cross in exhibition action on Sunday at Hart Field.

Louw opened the scoring for the Minutewomen in the 11th minute on an unassisted tally. She came up with a loose ball in the middle of the circle, played it with one touch and sent a booming shot over the Holy Cross goalkeeper and into the top of the cage.

In the 23rd minute the Maroon and White doubled their lead thanks to a tally from Cooper. After UMass was awarded the first penalty corner of the match, Louw rocketed a shot that was knocked down amid a scramble near the cage before Cooper finished the opportunity.

The second half saw the Minutewomen tack on two more goals, once again courtesy of Cooper and Louw. Fresh out of halftime in the 37th minute, Louw took a feed from Sophie de Jonge and placed her low shot just inside the left post. Cooper would go on to round out the scoring for the Minutewomen just over four minutes later with her second marker of the afternoon.

Holy Cross netted its lone tally in the final stages of regulation.

In a pre-planned maneuver, both Massachusetts goalkeepers saw game action. Freshman Johanna von dem Borne received the starting nod and was relieved at halftime by redshirt freshman Megan Davies.

UMass drew four penalty corners on the day to the Crusaders' three and also had the edge in shots, 20-5.

The Minutewomen open up the 2018 regular season at the University of New Hampshire's Wildcat Classic. Tournament action is slated to begin on Fri., Aug. 24 as UMass faces the host Wildcats at 6 p.m. in Durham, New Hampshire.
