MacLean And Sconone Tabbed UMass Student-Athletes Of The Week

The women’s track and field and men’s lacrosse duo was honored for championship performances last weekend.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's track and field redshirt senior Heather MacLean and men's lacrosse junior goalie Sean Sconone have been selected as the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week. Both MacLean and Sconone had standout performances in their respective teams' conference championships last week.

MacLean won two gold medals, set a meet record and scored in a relay en route to Most Outstanding Track Performer honors at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Peabody, Massachusetts native defended her 2017 A-10 title in 1,500 meter run, crossing the finish in 4 minutes, 19.87 seconds. She then went on to win her third career outdoor 800 meter gold, breaking her own meet record at 2 minutes, 5.61 seconds. MacLean also ran on UMass' fourth-place 4x400 meter relay that broke a 20-year-old UMass record, combining to run 3 minutes, 45.74 seconds. Her 20 individual points helped UMass finished fourth in team scoring with 93.5 points.

Sconone, the 2018 CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, made 27 saves over the two-day tournament and backstopped Massachusetts to its upcoming NCAA Championship appearance with only 14 goals allowed. The East Islip, New York native had 11 stops in the 10-6 victory over Hofstra on Thurs., May 3 and made 16 saves on Sat., May 5 in the title game victory over Towson, 12-8. His 27 saves against 14 goals given up equated to a .675 save percentage. Nine of his saves against Towson came during the pivotal second half, during which UMass turned its one-goal halftime lead into its comfortable victory. Sconone was named to the CAA All-Championship Team, as well.
