Minutemen add talented 6-foot-8 forward to incoming class for 2018-19 season.
AMHERST, Mass. – Minnesota native Sy Chatman (St. Paul, Minn.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team as announced Tuesday evening. The 6-foot-8 forward adds another skilled player to the Minutemen's frontcourt for the 2018-19 season.
"We are very excited to welcome Sy to our program," said head coach Matt McCall. "He has tremendous upside and his growth potential is similar to that of Carl Pierre. He has physically grown over the past year, and at 6-foot-8 now, may continue to do so. He adds a ton of versatility to our frontcourt especially for a player at his size. He comes from a great high school program that won a state championship in an area where basketball is excellent. He has great character and a winning demeanor after developing in the programs he's been a part of."
This past season, Chatman averaged 17.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists leading St. Paul's Cretin-Durham Hall to a Minnesota state championship title. His senior year was capped by earning Associated Press All-Minnesota Third-Team honors. For his efforts in the state playoffs, Chatman was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Alongside his prep career, Chatman also played AAU basketball for the Howard Pulley Panthers where three of his teammates have signed with Minnesota and another with Duke.
Chatman joins a pair of incoming freshmen who signed during the early period in Tre Wood (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Samba Diallo (Sparta, N.J.). Alongside the trio of freshmen, the Minutemen will also have the foursome of transfers in Curtis Cobb, Keon Clergeot, Kieran Hayward, and Jonathan Laurent who will be eligible this season after sitting out 2017-18 per NCAA transfer rules.
UMass returns guard Luwane Pipkins who will be the top returning Atlantic 10 scorer next season after averaging over 20 points a game this past season. Joining Pipkins in the back court will be the nation's most accurate three-point shooting freshman in Carl Pierre who broke the Minutemen's record for made three-pointers by a rookie in 2017-18. Overall, the Minutemen have seven players returning who logged significant minutes this past season.
