April 24, 2018 | General, Men's Lacrosse, Softball, Athletics Department
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts softball freshman pitcher Kiara Oliver and men's lacrosse junior goalie Sean Sconone share the UMass Student-Athlete of the Week Award after the duo helped their respective teams remain undefeated in their respective conferences.
The duo will be recognized at the Wed., April 25 UMass Sports Luncheon, hosted at the Berkshire Dining Common from Noon - 1 p.m.
Oliver went 2-0 in the circle with a 0.79 ERA while tossing 17.2 innings as the Minutewomen went 4-1 over the week. The freshman right-hander struck out seven batters in relief against Boston College before she put together a complete game effort in a game two win over St. Bonaventure. In game two, Oliver allowed just two hits while she struck out eight before she went on and struck out seven in game three and increased her total on the week to 22 Ks.
Sconone recorded a single-game personal-best 20 saves during Massachusetts' 11-4 win at Fairfield. He helped team turn a 3-1 deficit into an 11-3 lead by backstopping 35 minutes of shutout defense spanning the end of the second quarter, the entire third quarter and up through his departure from the game during a timeout with 1:45 left in the 4th quarter. His 20 saves rank tied for 3rd-most in a single NCAA Division I game this season and is four more than the previous best by a CAA goalie. It is the first game of 20 or more saves by a UMass goalie since current associate head coach Doc Schneider had 21 at Hobart on April 11, 2009.
The UMass Sports Luncheon's featured speakers will be Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sport Administration/SWA Kirsten Britton and men's soccer head coach Fran O'Leary.
The softball team has a busy week ahead of it, including a double-header against Rhode Island on Tues., April 24, one game versus Connecticut on Wed., April 25 and a three-game series at Fordham from April 28-29.
Men's lacrosse concludes the regular season at home with Senior Night against Hofstra at 5 p.m. on Fri., April 27. The game will be broadcast live on Lax Sports Network. The Minutemen locked up the top seed and hosting rights for the upcoming CAA Championship with their win at Fairfield.
