Men’s Hoops Shoots Lights Out In Second Half, Rallies For 85-84 Win Over FDU

December 21, 2018 | Men's Basketball

Rashaan Holloway scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half of the win.

AMHERST, Mass. – Rashaan Holloway scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half as UMass stormed back from behind as many as 14 points in the second half to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson 85-84 on Friday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Holloway helped lead a group of five Minutemen (7-5 Overall) in double-figures as Luwane Pipkins and Jonathan Laurent each scored a game-leading 20 points.

Pipkins' 20 helped the guard jump two spots on the UMass all-time scoring list, passing Al Skinner and Donta Wright to rank 21st all-time. The junior capped off his day by scoring the eventual game-winning basket with 32-seconds remaining in regulation in what was the final field goal of the afternoon for both teams.

Carl Pierre dropped in 13 on 5-of-7 shooting while Keon Clergeot scored 11, including five of his 10 first half points in the early moments of the contest as the Minutemen connected on their first three attempts to start the game.

The Knights (5-6 Overall) made seven of their first 10 shot attempts to hold a 16-13 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half as both squads committed five early turnovers each before ending the half with seven. Fairleigh Dickinson strung together a 13-0 scoring run in 3:59 of game time to pull ahead 32-19.

UMass ended the Knights scoring run on a Randall West offensive board and assist to a cutting Laurent, who finished with the one-handed dunk with 6:17 left in the half for two of his 11 in the opening 20 minutes of play. Laurent shot 4-of-5 from behind the arc and 6-of-8 from the field as he set a new UMass career-high in scoring.

A Clergeot baseline slam with 3:26 left in the half capped off a UMass stretch where the Minutemen made 5-of-6 shots to pull within seven as Fairleigh Dickinson took a 44-36 lead into halftime.

UMass shot a blistering 75-percent (18-24) from the field in the second half to highlight the victory while making 14 of their first 16 shots (87.5%) in second. Holloway helped improve the field goal percentage for the Minutemen with three straight slam dunks early in the half as they finished at 57-percent on the game after shooting 43-percent in the first.

The Minutemen pulled within four points on a Holloway slam at 13:07 and again on a Pierre 3-pointer with 9:31 left, one of his three on the day. UMass took its first lead since 10-9 at the 15:11 mark in the first half on a Pipkins 3-pointer with 7:25 remaining to put the Minutemen ahead 69-66 before a Fairleigh Dickinson run eventually put the visitors again with just over three minutes left.

Holloway picked up a key bucket with 0:43 left to bring UMass within a point at 84-83 before a Pipkins layup the following possession helped secure an 85-84 win.

The Minutemen will hit the road for their final non-conference game of the 2018-19 season when they head to Athens, Ga. to take on Georgia on Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. before returning home to open up Atlantic 10 play against La Salle on Jan. 5.
