Temple Rallies For 65-63 Win Over Men's Hoops

December 12, 2018 | Men's Basketball

Minutemen hold halftime lead, but Owls use 12-0 run in second half for comeback win.

PHILADELPHIA - A hot shooting first half gave the Minutemen a 10-point halftime lead, but Temple used a big second half run in a 65-63 comeback win over the UMass basketball team on Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center. The Owls strung together a 12-0 run early in the second stanza in a game that featured 11 lead changes and five ties that was a hallmark of the past series between the two former league rivals.

Keon Clergeot, Jonathan Laurent and Luwane Pipkins each scored 12 points to lead UMass (6-5), while Curtis Cobb had a team-high seven rebounds to go with four assists and two steals. The Minutemen shot nearly 52 percent (15-of-29) in the first half to build out a 37-27 lead at the break, but converted just 10-of-30 field goals in the second half.

Temple (8-2) was led by a game-high 31 points from Shizz Alston, Jr. - a scoring total bolstered by an 11-of-12 effort at the free throw line. Quinton Rose added 14 points, five rebounds and four steals as the only other Owl in double-figures. Temple shot 41 percent (14-of-34) in the second half compared to a 33.3 percent effort in the first half.

The opening 14 minutes of play saw the teams trading baskets until an 8-0 run for the Minutemen gave the visiting team some breathing room. A three-pointer by Pipkins with 5:56 remaining was followed by a lay-up from Samba Diallo, another Pipkins jumper and a free throw by Carl Pierre pushing UMass ahead 29-29 in the span of nearly two minutes.

A Diallo three-pointer started the scoring in the second half, but the Owls then went on a 12-to-0 run cutting the UMass lead to 40-39 at the 14:49 mark. Just under two minutes later, the Temple re-took the lead on a De'Vondre Perry basket before the teams traded leads four more times.

Temple led by as many as five late in the half, but UMass was able to cut the margin to one following a pair of Pipkins free throws with 3:33 left in regulation. The Owls twice pushed the lead back to five, but a pair of put-backs from Sy Chatman in the final minute cut the Temple lead to one again with nine seconds to go.

Alston hit 1-of-2 free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining. He missed the second attempt after a lengthy official review and UMass was able to clear the rebound, but unable to get off a shot near half court as the buzzer sounded.

UMass will have eight days between games for exams as the Minutemen host Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, Dec. 21 at the Mullins Center. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 PM as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The game will be available digitally on ESPN+.
