AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Sports Luncheon Committee announced on Tuesday that sophomore Oliver Chau (hockey), sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey (women's basketball) and junior Luwane Pipkins (men's basketball) have been named the UMass Student-Athletes of the Week presented by UMassFive College Credit Union.
Â
All three will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wed., Nov. 28 at noon in Berkshire Dining Commons. The event is open to the public for $11.50 per person with lunch included. Parking is available adjacent to Berkshire in Lot 33 as well as at metered spots in the Southwest Horseshoe and along Fearing Street.
Â
Guest speakers at the luncheon will include baseball head coach Matt Reynolds, softball head coach Kristi Stefanoni and hockey assistant coach Jared DeMichiel.
Â
Chau scored the overtime game winner to lift the then No. 4-ranked Minutemen to a 3-2 victory over No. 18 Princeton on Sat., Nov. 24 at the Mullins Center. Now ranked third nationally, the Minutemen have won eight straight games, the longest active winning streak in the nation. That also matches the longest winning streak in program history, tying a mark set in 1970, spanning the 1969-70 and 1970-71 seasons.
Â
Hampton-Bey had a week to remember as UMass went 3-1. She averaged 16.8 points, five assists, 4.5 rebounds and nearly two steals over the week, with the last three games coming at the Brown University Turkey Tip-Off. She contributed a double-double with 18 points and a career-high 10 assists in the win over UTRGV (Nov. 20). After a Friday night setback against Bucknell (Nov. 23), Hampton-Bey responded with back-to-back 18-point displays, helping her teammates to wins over Brown (Nov. 24) and Fairfield (Nov. 25), capping a busy stretch of three games in three days for the Minutewomen.
Â
Pipkins led UMass to a runner-up finish in the Continental Tires Las Vegas Holiday Invitational and a 2-1 week overall with wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Southern Illinois and a loss to No. 6 Nevada. The junior averaged 16.7 points in the three games along with 7.3 rebounds and 7.0 assists. Pipkins had a double-double of 11 assists and 10 rebounds in Monday's win over UAPB - both career highs. In Las Vegas, he scored 16 points while adding six assists and five rebounds in the win over Southern Illinois. He closed out the week with a 30-point effort against Nevada while adding seven rebounds and four assists.
Â
In addition to Chau, Hampton-Bey and Pipkins, the committee will recognize last week's honorees as no luncheon was held due to the Thanksgiving holiday. That group includes Jessica George (women's basketball) and Jacob Pritchard (hockey).
