Men’s Hoops Cruises Past Westfield State In Exhibition

October 30, 2018 | Men's Basketball

Luwane Pipkins led all scorers with 21 points while four more Minutemen added double-digit scoring.

AMHERST, Mass. – Five Minutemen reached double-digits in the scoring column while 10 players scored as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team cruised to an 84-60 win over Westfield State on Tuesday in their lone exhibition game of 2018-19. The Minutemen were led by Luwane Pipkins' 21 points in 20 minutes while four more players eclipsed 10 or more points on the night.

UMass put together a balanced early offensive attack as four different scorers helped the Minutemen go ahead 12-8 on a Carl Pierre triple. Pierre's triple was part of a 10-1 UMass run that brought the tally to 17-9 after Westfield State took their only lead of the night at 8-7. Pipkins scored eight of the first 15 UMass points and reached 20 early in the second half while also adding a game-high five assists for a team that had 19 on the night.

Kieran Hayward became the ninth of 10 Minutemen to score on the night as the sophomore connected for his first 3-pointer of the contest and followed with a layup the next possession to give UMass its largest lead of the game up until that point at 43-26 with little time left in the first half. UMass shot over 51-percent from the field with a 40-percent clip from range while forcing the Owls into 15 of their 27 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Tre Wood gave UMass the largest lead all night with a nifty move past a defender to the hoop to bring the score to 70-38 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the contest. The freshman Wood finished with 10 points off the bench on 4-of-7 from the field to go along with four assists.

Starters Jonathan Laurent and Curtis Cobb were two of five double-digit scorers for UMass as they each posted 11 points with four field goals made each. Cobb connected on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc for a UMass team that shot 11-of-30 (36.7-percent) from range while shooting just under 50-percent from the field on the game.

Samba Diallo hauled in a tied for game-high six boards in 24 minutes off the bench to go along with seven points of 3-of-4 from the field while Sy Chatman and Keon Clergeot each added four points of their own.

The Minutemen will officially open up the 2018-19 regular-season in a week when they play host to UMass Lowell on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
