VCU Outlasts Minutewomen in Atlantic 10 Semifinals, 3-2
November 02, 2018 | Field Hockey
MERION STATION, Pa. – VCU's Litiana Field scored off of a penalty corner in the 82nd minute as University of Massachusetts field hockey fell to the Rams, 3-2, in double overtime on Friday afternoon in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals at Ellen Ryan Field. VCU (12-6) advances to the title game on Sat., Nov. 3 against top-seed and tournament host Saint Joseph's. The result also ends a run of six consecutive years in which Massachusetts (10-10) appeared in the A-10 Championship Game.
After trailing 2-0 at halftime the Minutewomen once again continued their trend of second half rallies. Sophomore Lucy Cooper halved the deficit in the 40th minute before senior Courtney Ocasal potted the equalizer, her first career goal, in the 52nd minute.
Cooper's tally began out of a VCU turnover. Junior Antonet Louw came away with the ball in the attacking third and quickly connected with Cooper on the edge of the circle, before Cooper went head-on with Sasha Elliott and slipped her shot over the diving goalkeeper for her ninth goal of the season.
Twelve minutes later, the score moved to 2-2 when Ocasal cleaned up a rebound near the right post. Cooper turned into the circle and had her shot deflected by a Rams defender before being kicked away by Elliott. As she did, the carom went off a stick and to Ocasal for the reverse-stick shot that sent her teammates and the UMass fans into celebration.
Both sides had chances in each overtime period, but clutch stops by both goalkeepers and game-saving tackles, including one by graduate student Clodagh Moloney in the 73rd minute, kept the match rolling.
Emily McNamara, the nation's leading goal scorer, buried each of VCU's first two tallies in the opening 28 minutes. In the ninth minute Shannon Pereira found McNamara from the top of the circle before she put the Rams on the board, then Field set her up during a corner in the 28th minute.
Freshman Johanna von dem Borne had nine saves on the day and Moloney came up with a defensive stop in the 55th minute during a flurry of shots. For the Rams, Elliott finished with six saves.
VCU held a 13-8 advantage in shots on-cage as well as a 9-2 grip on penalty corners, including a 5-0 margin in the first 35 minutes.
