Makar Repeats As Hockey East Player Of The Week

October 22, 2018 | Hockey

The sophomore defenseman added four more points to his season total, three of which came in the Minutemen’s victory over No. 1 Ohio State.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey sophomore defenseman Cale Makar has been tabbed the Hockey East Player of the Week for a second straight week, the league office announced on Monday. Makar earned the honor following a four-point weekend against then-No. 1 Ohio State and has helped the Minutemen (3-1-0) into the national rankings for the first time since 2010.

Makar logged his second multi-point game of the season with a goal and two assists in UMass' 6-3 upset of No. 1 Ohio State on the road last Friday night. Two of his three points came in the third period to give the Minutemen some much-needed breathing room against the rallying Buckeyes, who had cut a three-goal deficit to one.

The Calgary, Alberta native then added his eighth point of the season and fourth of the weekend, setting up UMass' lone goal in Saturday's 3-1 loss. The Minutemen were tied with or led the top-ranked Buckeyes for all but the final 1:22 of the two-game series, when Ohio State scored the would-be game winner on Saturday before adding an empty net goal.

Friday's victory marked the Minutemen's (3-0-0) fifth-ever win in program history over a No. 1-ranked team and second-ever on the road, with the last coming at Boston University on Feb. 10, 2012. The win helped vault UMass into the USCHO Poll for the first time since Feb. 15, 2010, with a No. 16 ranking this week.

Makar is currently first in Hockey East in points per-game (2.00) on the season, tied for first in assists per-game (1.25) and tied for third in goals per-game (0.75). He leads the Minutemen with eight points on three goals and five assists through four games thus far.

The No. 16 Minutemen will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 26, hosting Merrimack for the squad's 2018-19 Hockey East opener at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
