UMass tennis sweeps all matches en route to a 7-0 win over the Bulldogs
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis secured its first dual match win of the spring, and the second of the 2017-18 campaign, with a 7-0 sweep of the Bryant Bulldogs at the Bay Road Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon. The Maroon and White improved their record to 2-1 with the decisive win, while Bryant dropped to 1-1.
Massachusetts secured the doubles point with victories in all three pairings. Victories at No. 2 and No. 3 secured the first team point of the day while a long battle took place at No. 1 doubles.
Ruth Crawford and Janja Kovacevic put in a quick match against Stefanie Arroyo and Caterina Luisa Rokke with a 6-1 victory before Anna Napadiy and Ashley Avery closed out Nina Luiggi and Megan Tan for a 6-2 win and the doubles point.
With all spectators focused on the No. 1 doubles battles, Ana Yrazusta and Laura Moreno rallied from a two-set deficit and forced a tie-breaker before the duo claimed a 7-6 (7-5) win over Ashanti Campfield and Linnea Sjoberg.
The day also included an exhibition doubles match, which pitted Jovana Bogicevic and Martina Bocchi against Aleksi Gottlieb and Ariana Oropeza. Bogicevic and Bocchi came away with the victory as well, a 6-1 triumph.
Kovacevic secured the Minutewomen their first singles match victory via a 6-1, 6-0 win over her Bryant counterpart at No. 3 singles, Luiggi. Yrazusta followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sjoberg as Massachusetts extended its lead to 3-0.
Crawford provided the deciding victory for Massachusetts at No. 1 singles in memorable fashion. With the Atlanta, Georgia, native ahead following a first-set win, Crawford trailed in the second set after Campfield won the first three games and the match looked destined to a tie-breaking third set. However, Crawford rallied with wins in six of the next seven games for the 6-1, 6-4 triumph.
With the team victory secured, Massachusetts put together the sweep with victories from Moreno (No. 4), Napadiy (No. 5) and Bocchi (No. 6). Moreno outlasted Arroyo in a 2-6, 6-4 (10-6) marathon as Napadiy posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rokke. Bocchi closed out the day with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Arianna Oropeza.
