Defense Spurs UMass Field Hockey To One-Goal Win Over Sacred Heart

Hawkshaw scores game-winner; Hazard collects shutout victory in net
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts field hockey secured a one-goal victory over visiting Sacred Heart at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Friday evening. Sarah Hawkshaw scored the lone goal on an assist from Rachael Burchell as the Minutewomen improved to 3-2 overall while Sacred Heart fell to 2-3.
With Hawkshaw parked at the right post in the 31st minute, Burchell dribbled left and angled a pass through the Sacred Heart defense and Pioneers goalkeeper Emily Degennaro. Hawkshaw fielded the pass and deposited it into the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season and the 35th of Hawkshaw's career.
The UMass defense limited Sacred Heart to three shots over the contest, with all of those in the first half. The backline of Melanie Kreusch, Georgie McTear and Shauna Rankin-Byrne combined with goalkeeper Emily Hazard for the shutout victory, the first clean sheet of the season.
Massachusetts outshot Sacred Heart 17-3, including a 13-1 advantage in on-target attempts. The Minutewomen totaled eight penalty corners, while the defense kept the Pioneers from earning one of their own.
Hazard made one save for the win. Two Sacred Heart goalkeepers split time in the cage as Emily Degennaro started and allowed the lone goal with six saves made. Hailey Power took over cage duties after halftime and finished out the game with five stops. Sacred Heart midfielder Marlena Koellner added a defensive save during a penalty corner.
The Minutewomen conclude their two-game homestand with a contest against No. 16 Boston University on Sun., Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
