Tennis Opens 2017-18 With Dual Match At Brown

Napadiy wins at No. 4 singles; Moreno and Yrazusta take No. 2 doubles match
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Massachusetts women's tennis and head coach Juancarlos Nunez began the 2017-18 campaign at the Brown Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island, on Friday as part of the Brown Invitational. The inclement weather-filled day marked the inaugural dual match for Nunez, who is in his first season as the program's head coach.
Brown took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The Minutewomen claimed the No. 2 doubles match as Laura Moreno and Ana Yrazusta downed Katie Ta and Courtney Kowalsy, 6-1. The teams also fielded a fourth doubles match, with pitted Martina Bocchi and Jovana Bogicevic against Maddie Stearns and Semi Oloko. Bocchi and Bogicevic prevailed, 6-3.
The Bears claimed wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, led by Alyza Benott's victory over Yrazusta 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1. Stearns claimed a No. 2 battle with Janja Kovacevic 4-6, 6-3 (10-5) while Devon Jack won 2-6, 6-3 (10-8) against Ruth Crawford.
Anna Napadiy found success in her single match as she collected a victory at No. 4 singles over Kowalsky. After Napadiy dropped the first set, 0-6, she rallies for a 6-4 win in the second set and took the tie-break, 10-4.
Massachusetts dropped matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Moreno faltered in her first set at No. 5 singles, 6-2, before she rallied the second set to force a tie-breaker with Ta; however, Ta prevailed in the extra set. Bocchi also dropped the first set, 6-2, before she claimed the second set, but Cosme took the tie-breaker as well.
The squads added No. 7 and No. 8 singles matchups, which the teams split. Massachusetts won at No. 8, with Ashley Avery the victor over Oloko 6-4, 6-4. The Bears' Juliana Simon took a 6-2, 6-2 match from Bogicevic at No. 7.
Massachusetts continues participation at the Brown Invitational with competition on Sat., Sept. 23.
