Dijkstra scores clinching goal in 63rd minute
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts field hockey tallied a pair of second half goals and mounted a comeback victory over No. 16 Boston University at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Saturday. Sarah Hawkshaw scored once, her fifth of the year, and Anne Dijkstra added the clincher as UMass improved to 4-2 on the season.
Melanie Kreusch assisted Hawkshaw on the game-tying goal while Lucy Cooper earned an assist on Dijkstra's tally. Emily Hazard collected the win with three saves, including two in the pivotal second half. The loss dropped Boston University to 4-2 overall.
Boston University's Ailsa Connolly put the Terriers on the board in the 22nd minute when she converted a sweeping shot at the left post. Kali Schumock earned an assist on the play.
Massachusetts applied pressure to the Boston University defense throughout the second half, with five penalty corners drawn, and used a pair of those opportunities to net the game-tying and winning goals.
Hawkshaw evened the contest at 1-all in the 54th minute with a diving redirection of Kreusch's penalty corner hit. The goal marked the 36th of her UMass career and tied her for seventh in the record book all-time alongside Katie Kelly (2007-10) and Pam Moryl (1981-84).
Dijkstra put UMass in front nine minutes later with her first conversion of the season. On a short-corner direct insert from Cooper, Dijkstra ricocheted a shot attempt off a Boston University defender and into the top-right of the goal netting for the decisive score.
The Minutewomen take to the road for their next game, a Fri., Sept. 15 tilt at Davidson at 5:30 p.m.
