DeSantis and Hawkshaw Named Student-Athletes of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer senior Alex DeSantis and field hockey senior Sarah Hawkshaw have been named co-UMass Student Athletes of the Week. The duo will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, August 30, which will be held at Berkshire Dining Common from noon to 1 p.m.

DeSantis led the men's soccer team its first 2-0 start to a season since 2012 with a 2-1 win over St. Francis and a 3-0 win over Sacred Heart, posting a pair of goals and a pair of assists last weekend in those contests. The Midfielder played a part in all three tallies against Sacred Heart, finishing the match with a career-high two goals and a career-high five points. He assisted UMass' opening goal of the day on a corner kick before scoring another just before the half, while his second goal came midway through the second half. In the win on Friday against St. Francis, DeSantis earned an assist by setting up the game-winning goal in the second half.

Hawkshaw scored three goals over two victories as field hockey opened the season with an 8-3 win over Holy Cross and a 2-1 edging of Vermont last weekend. The Dublin, Ireland native, tallied twice against the Crusaders with goals in the 55th and 69th minutes on Friday. She then started the offense against Vermont only 63 seconds into the game on Sunday. Her goal on Sunday was the 34th of her career, tying her for ninth all-time in UMass history.

Cost to attend the luncheon is $11, payable by credit card, cash, UCard, Dining Dollars or campus meal plans. Guest speakers will be women's soccer head coach Ed Matz and a member of the football coaching staff.
