Mario Ferraro NHL Draft

Hockey’s Ferraro Taken 49th in NHL Draft

June 24, 2017 | Hockey

CHICAGO – University of Massachusetts hockey incoming freshman Mario Ferraro was selected 49th overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday at the United Center. Ferraro, a 5-10, 185-pound defenseman, is the second-highest draft pick in program history as fellow 2017 draftee and fourth overall pick Cale Makar is the only Minuteman to be taken higher.

"It's another great day for UMass hockey as Mario Ferraro was chosen high in the draft at No. 49 by the San Jose Sharks," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Mario was selected due to his skating ability, his competitiveness and intangibles that very few players possess. He is an ultra competitor and never runs out of energy. You can't help but notice him on the ice, because he is always making things happen. Whether with his skating, his offensive ability or his physical play, Mario is a difference maker. Beyond that, he is a tremendous young man and we are fortunate to have him coming to campus this fall."

Ferraro played his final season of junior hockey in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Des Moines Buccaneers and totaled 41 points on eight goals and 33 assists over 60 regular season contests. He garnered USHL First All-Star Team and USHL All-Rookie Team accolades after tying for first among USHL defensemen in goals and ranking second in points and assists.

The King City, Ontario native previously spent two seasons (2014-16) with the Toronto Patriots of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) where he logged 56 points on eight goals and 48 assists over 116 career games in the OJHL. He helped Toronto win an OJHL championship in 2014-15 and was an OJHL Second Team All-Prospect selection in 2015-16.

Ferraro and Makar are a part of a UMass incoming recruiting class for the 2017-18 season that is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by Neutral Zone.
