May 03, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse

Muller collects first team at midfield; Paparo, Rak tabbed to second team

RICHMOND, Va. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse split five Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) year-end awards, highlighted by redshirt senior midfielder Dan Muller's first team nod. Sophomore close defenseman Isaac Paparo and junior faceoff specialist Noah Rak earned second team spots while Jeff Trainor collected CAA All-Rookie Team and Muller was named to the six-man CAA All-Academic Team.

Muller enters the 2017 CAA Championship with a team-high 30 points on 17 goals and 13 assists. Muller's 30 points and 13 assists represent career highs for the fifth-year midfielder from Massapequa, New York, while his 17 goals tie his previous single-season best. Muller earned the Academic All-CAA award as a double-major in sport management and finance.

Paparo slid into a starting role at close defense prior to the win over UMass Lowell as he opened the year as the No. 1 long-stick midfielder. Over 13 appearances split between the roles, Paparo owns a team-high 27 caused turnovers, the most in one season by a Minuteman since the NCAA began recognizing the statistics officially in 2010 and the seventh-best per game total (2.08) in NCAA Division I as of May 1, 2017. Paparo also has 38 groundballs, the most among non-faceoff specialists on the team and sixth-highest total in the CAA.

Rak sports the best faceoff win percentage (.609) and second-most faceoff victories (123) in the CAA despite missing the opening three games of the season. He averages the most faceoff wins per game (12.3) in the CAA and is second in the league for groundballs per game (5.9). Rak also ranks 11th in the nation for faceoff percentage and 19th in groundballs per game.

Trainor, a true-freshman from Billerica, Massachusetts, sports nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points on the season as a second line midfielder during 11 games played. After a slow start to the year during which he only posted one assist over the opening four games, Trainor averages 2.7 points per game over his latest seven appearances.
