Lagesson Signs with Edmonton Oilers
April 07, 2017 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey defenseman William Lagesson has signed a three-year entry level contract with the Edmonton Oilers, the organization announced on Friday. The sophomore, who served as one of the Minutemen's assistant captains in 2016-17, will forego his final two year of collegiate eligibility. Lagesson, a native of Gothenburg, Sweden, is the 19th Minuteman to sign his first professional contract in the past five years.
"Although we will miss the leadership that Willy provided to our hockey program this past year, my staff and I are excited for him to move on and prove himself at the professional level," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "During his two years at UMass, he was a fierce competitor on the ice and a player that showed his true commitment off the ice. It was a pleasure for me to coach him this past season and he will be missed. Willy is a great kid and I wish him the best."
Lagesson appeared in 63 games over two years with the Maroon and White and was one of just four Minutemen to appear in all 36 games during the 2016-17 season. He completes his UMass career with 15 career points on four goals and 11 assists, including a career best eight points (2g, 6a) in 2016-17.
Lagesson was selected by the Oilers in the 4th round, 91st overall in the 2014 NHL Draft and has seen action in over 100 international contests for Sweden at the U16, U17, U18 and U20 levels, most recently at the 2016 World Junior Hockey Championship. He also represented Sweden at the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championship, and was with Team Sweden at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and the 2013 Under-18 World Junior Hockey Championship, as well.
