Men’s Soccer Adds Jackson Fotter for Fall Campaign
April 03, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Incoming freshman netted 65 career goals at Gorham High School in Maine
AMHERST, Mass. – One of the top high school players in Maine, Jackson Fotter has signed with the UMass men's soccer program as announced by head coach Fran O'Leary on Monday. Fotter led Gorham High School last season to the Class A Championship game finishing the year with 31 goals.
"We are very excited to welcome Jackson to the UMass soccer family," said O'Leary. "He is another addition to our program who will help us improve our offensive capabilities as we continue working to compete at the upper levels of the Atlantic 10."
"Having lived in Maine for several years, I am well versed in the quality of players that come out of the state. Jackson is a versatile player who is comfortable on the wing and upfront. He possesses great dribbling ability and has a good strike rate in front of goal. We are excited to add him to our attacking corps."
Fotter finished his prep career with 65 goals, a Gorham record, en route to All-New England and Southwestern Maine Activities Association Offensive Player of the Year honors. He was also named the Maine Telegram Player of the Year and to the Telegram All-State Boys Soccer Team.
During his career, the forward was a two-time All-Maine, a two-time all-region and a three-time all-conference selection as well.
At the club level, Fotter helped the Seacoast United Under-17 premier squad win a national title last summer. His performance helped him earn the 2016 Steven Labreque Award. He also helped Seacoast win the national title in 2015 along with the Maine and Potomac championship titles.
Fotter is the fifth newcomer announced for the men's soccer program. During the early signing period, in February, the Minutemen received commitments from Christian Carucci (Staten Island, N.Y.), Eli Cronin (Boxford, Mass.), and Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.). Last week, Australian native Jack Fulton signed a National Letter of Intent after a highly successful junior college career at Feather River College in Quincy, Calif.
This past fall, UMass finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 regular-season standings after being picked to place 10th in the preseason poll. In O'Leary's second-year, the Minutemen posted a 4-2-2 record in league play to qualify for the A-10 Tournament for the second consecutive season - the first back-to-back postseason appearance for UMass since 2007-08.
The Minutemen ranked as the No. 1 defense in A-10 matches having conceded just four goals against league foes. The group didn't allow a single goal at home in four league games going 3-0-1 at Rudd Field.
