Second-Half Run Propels UMass To 82-60 Win Over Springfield College

The Minutemen dropped 44 points in the second half, outscoring the Pride by 19 on their way to the win.
AMHERST, Mass. – All five starters posted double-digit points as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball defeated Springfield College 82-60 in their lone exhibition game on Friday evening at the Mullins Center. C.J. Anderson led all scorers with 16 points while Chris Baldwin chipped in a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Anderson opened up the game with a breakaway dunk in a contest that was back-and-forth early with neither team extending their lead past two until Springfield grabbed a 30-27 advantage after a Cam Earle 3-pointer with 4:30 left in the opening half. Earle led the Pride in scoring on the night with 14 points.

Down 32-29 with 3:41 left in the first, UMass strung together seven straight points to take a 36-32 capped off by an Anderson dunk off a Luwane Pipkins steal followed by a Malik Hines tip-in. Hines provided 13 points to go along with six rebounds while Pipkins added 14 points, six assists and three steals.

After not hitting a 3-pointer in the first half, the Minutemen came out early in the second half and knocked down three consecutive deep balls to put together a 9-0 run to bring the score to 49-40 behind makes from Pipkins, Baldwin and Anderson. UMass finished with five 3-pointers made after starting the night 0-9 from behind the arc.

Springfield cut into the then-largest lead of the game for UMass just moments later to pull within four before a Rayshawn Miller jumper ended the run as the Minutemen began to pull away from the Pride down the stretch.

Unique McLean added 13 points, including seven straight sparked by a putback dunk on the offensive end and capped off by a free throw to put UMass up 61-45. McLean gave the Minutemen their largest lead of the night with just over two minutes remaining on a tip-in layup at 78-54.

The Minutemen shot 60-percent in the second half while holding Springfield to 34.6-percent on a night where the UMass defense provided five blocks and five steals.

UMass will open up regular season play on Friday, Nov. 10 against UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
