Hawkshaw’s Second Half Tally Lifts Field Hockey Over Providence, 1-0
October 08, 2017 | Field Hockey
Minutewomen have won eight of last 10 matches.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts field hockey used a second half goal by Sarah Hawkshaw to earn a 1-0 road win over Providence College on Sunday at Lennon Family Field. Both teams battled heavy rain to start the match before the skies cleared midway through the first half.
The victory improves the Minutewomen to 10-4 on the season, while Providence drops to 8-5.
Goalkeeper Emily Hazard earned her third shutout of 2017 with seven saves, including five in the first half, while Providence's Megan Guilbert had five stops.
Hazard turned aside two chances early on for the Friars to keep the match scoreless. That sequence included an attempt by Mikayla Michals in the 10th minute, however Hazard charged left out of the cage and made a diving save to preserve the tie.
UMass finally got on the scoreboard in the 40th minute on Hawkshaw's strike. Lucy Cooper darted down the left sideline, finding Hawkshaw on a nicely timed give and go in the circle that beat Guilbert.
Down the stretch the Minutewomen thwarted multiple offensive opportunities for Providence, including successfully defending two Friar penalty corners in the final seven minutes of regulation.
While UMass came away with the final advantage on the scoreboard, the Friars did outshoot the visitors 11-10 and had the edge in corners, 6-2.
Hawkshaw's goal marked her 88th and 89th career points scored, moving her into sole possession of seventh all-time in program history in that category. Katie Kelly (2007-10) is sixth with 93 points.
A trip to the Midwestern United States now awaits the Minutewomen as the Maroon and White head to Saint Louis for a Fri., Oct. 13 match at 5 p.m. Central Time, before visiting Northwestern on Sun., Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. Central Time.
