No. 24 Field Hockey Holds Off Saint Louis, 3-2

October 13, 2017 | Field Hockey

Three unanswered tallies help Minutewomen to 15th consecutive win over SLU.

ST. LOUIS – No. 24 ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey withstood a late rally by Saint Louis to come away with a 3-2 victory at SportPort International on Friday night. After UMass jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 52nd minute, the Billikens countered with two of their own tallies before the Maroon and White shut the door in the final stages of regulation.

Friday's result puts UMass at 11-4 on the season, including a 5-1 record in Atlantic 10 matches. Saint Louis drops to 4-9 and 0-6 against league foes. The victory also moved the Minutewomen to 15-0 all-time against SLU.

A total of 20 different field players saw game action for the Minutewomen, while Emily Hazard and Camille Lecrone split time in the cage.

Massachusetts opened the scoring for the evening in the 10th minute, using Shauna Rankin-Byrne's second tally of the season to get on the board. In the aftermath of a penalty corner, Georgie McTear fired on goal only to have her shot redirected by Rankin-Byrne.

In the 32nd minute the Minutewomen doubled their lead, this time off the stick of Grace Horgan. With Horgan set up left of goalkeeper Lillian Cossetto, Courtney Ocasal directed a pass that Horgan ultimately put into the back of the cage, inking her third tally of 2017.

UMass added what would prove to be the difference in the 52nd minute after McTear finished a penalty corner, with helpers on the play being credited to Jamie Melley and Sophie de Jonge.

The Billikens chipped away with a quick pair, seeing Carly Kissinger (60th minute) and Katie Moss (65th minute) sign the box score. As regulation wound to a close, SLU drew two corners in search of the equalizer, but the visitors foiled both attempts to seal the 3-2 outcome.

UMass ended the night holding a 12-5 advantage in both shots and penalty corners. The former included a 7-2 margin in on-target attempts.

The Minutewomen now head north to Evanston, Illinois in preparation for a Sun., Oct. 15 match with No. 9 Northwestern. Opening whistle is set for noon Eastern Time.
