Football, cross country stars provide clutch veteran performances
Laurent booted a game-tying 45-yard field goal with five seconds left in regulation before he won the contest with a 36-yard conversion in double overtime as Massachusetts downed Appalachian State, 30-27, for the program's biggest win of the team's FBS era. Laurent finished the game 3-of-3 on field goals, which also included a 47-yarder in the first quarter. He accounted for 12 of the team's points as he was also 3-of-3 on extra points.
Laurent's outing against the Mountaineers improved Laurent to 5-for-5 on field goals this season, with each coming in the last three games after he was limited to start the year due to injury. He is now 24-of-32 (.750) all-time on field goals, which ranks him third all-time at UMass in field goal conversion percentage and seventh in field goals made and field goals attempted. Additionally, Laurent was the punter and kickoff specialist against Appalachian State and boomed eight punts for 357 yards (44.6 ypp) while he sent three of his five kickoffs for touchbacks.
MacLean repeated as the Atlantic 10 individual champion in women's cross country, helping lead the Minutewomen to a fourth-place team finish (143 points) in a field of 14 squads. She was tabbed the women's Most Outstanding Performer and earned A-10 All-Conference recognition. MacLean joins UMass Hall of Famer Rebecca Donaghue as just the second Minutewoman in program history to win back-to-back Atlantic 10 Cross Country titles. She completed the 5K course in 17 minutes, 22.2 seconds, a healthy 28.4-second margin ahead of her nearest competitor.
