Ferraro nets two power-play goals in the loss for the Minutemen, the first two tallies of his career.
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey erased an early 2-0 deficit, but Merrimack went on to score the next three of the contest to hand the Minutemen a 5-3 setback at Lawler Rink on Saturday night. The loss leaves UMass at 4-4-0 on the season, 1-1-0 in Hockey East, while the Warriors move to 1-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in league action
"Merrimack was a very desperate team tonight and played the way they are capable of," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "In this building, they play a specific way, which is they frustrate you, they clog the neutral zone and they transition well. Full marks to Merrimack, they played to their game plan very well, out-competed us and did exactly what I think they wanted to do tonight."
Merrimack took a 1-0 lead shortly after UMass finished killing off the first penalty of the game. Marc Biega's shot off a feed from Alex Carle and Ludvig Larrson found its way through traffic 5:52 into the opening period.
The Warriors pushed the advantage to 2-0 at the 8:30 mark. Tyler Irving forced a turnover at the UMass blueline and Jace Hennig skated in alone on Matt Murray for the score.
Freshman Oliver Chau cut the deficit in half for the Minutemen 9:40 into the frame, cleaning up a rebound off a Josh Couturier shot after an offensive zone faceoff win by redshirt senior Niko Rufo.
The Minutemen then tied the score at 2-2 on a power play opportunity late in the period. Freshman Mario Ferraro put home a rebound from Chau and Cale Makar at the 18:45 mark for his first collegiate goal.
Merrimack regained the lead midway through the second period when Laine McKay found Ryan Cook alone in the high slot for a strike at 9:18.
The Warriors later went back in front by two 7:49 into the third when Tyler Irvine knocked the puck in amidst a scramble in front of the net on a delayed penalty. Henning then added Merrimack's fifth of the night on the ensuing power play to give the Warriors a 5-2 lead.
Ferraro capped the scoring with his second of the night on the power play at the 14:50 mark of the third period from freshman Philip Lagunov and Chau with one second left on a 5-on-3 for the Minutemen.
Merrimack finished the contest with a 31-22 shot advantage and went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 2-for-5. Murray totaled 26 saves in net for UMass and Craig Pantano stopped 19 shots for the Warriors.
