Hawkshaw’s Late Goal Sends Field Hockey Past Richmond, 2-1
October 27, 2017 | Field Hockey
Minutewomen now await final seeding in Atlantic 10 Championship
AMHERST, Mass. – Sarah Hawkshaw redirected a Melanie Kreusch feed in the 69th minute to etch the game-winning goal and give University of Massachusetts field hockey a 2-1 win over Richmond on a beautiful Friday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
The win gives UMass a record of 12-7 to finish the regular season and a 6-2 mark in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond wraps up at 8-10 and an identical 6-2 record against league foes. Both clubs also have clinched spots in next week's Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship.
UMass goalkeeper Emily Hazard had four saves in the win and Richmond's Felicitas Heinzel made seven stops.
Kreusch put the Minutewomen on the board in the eighth minute as a result of a penalty stroke, which was awarded when a UMass shot illegally touched a Richmond defender en route to the cage. She stepped to the penalty spot and tucked the ball to the right of Heinzel, giving the Minutewomen a 1-0 advantage on her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Hazard made a particularly key save in the 13th minute on a Spiders corner attempt. Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland put a shot on goal and while Hazard used her blocker to knock the ball away, the Minutewomen also received some help from the crossbar in retaining their 1-0 advantage.
The Spiders equalized in the 60th minute when Kasey Gilbride received a lead pass in the circle and quickly found Katrina Balatgek, who spun around a charging Hazard and poked a shot into the back of the cage.
Hawkshaw's strike culminated a penalty corner sequence that began with Lucy Cooper's insert and a stop by Mirra Stillman. Kreusch corralled the ball at the edge of the circle, firing on target with Hawkshaw camped near the penalty spot to set up the deflection into the top left corner. It was the senior's ninth goal of 2017 and 40th of her career.
UMass drew a total of 10 penalty corners on the day while surrendering only two at the other end of the pitch. The Minutewomen also bested Richmond in shots on goal, 11-5.
Massachusetts will host the 2017 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship from Nov. 3-4 at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. Seedings for the tournament will be known following the Saint Joseph's-Davidson match on Sat., Oct. 28. For more information, visit A-10 Championship Central.
