Minutewomen advance to league title game for sixth consecutive season

AMHERST, Mass. โ€“ Sophie de Jonge and Grace Horgan provided all the scoring University of Massachusetts field hockey would need as the No. 2 seeded Minutewomen defeated No. 3 seed VCU, 2-0, on Friday in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
ย
With the win, UMass advances to Saturday's Atlantic 10 Championship Game and will face top-seeded Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m. at Gladchuk. Friday's result also moves the Minutewomen to 13-7 on the season, while VCU exits the tournament with a 14-6 record.
ย
UMass struck first in the 25th minute on de Jonge's strike, her third of the 2017 campaign. After a penalty corner insert, Georgie McTear corralled the ball for a single touch before dishing left to Melanie Kreusch. Kreusch one-timed the feed toward the cage before de Jonge, stationed to the right of the penalty spot, caused a redirection across VCU goalkeeper Chessa Kownurko and into the left side of the cage.
ย
In the 50th minute the Minutewomen doubled their lead when McTear dribbled along the far sideline before the ball was intercepted by a VCU defender, but sent into the circle. A charging Courtney Ocasal then corralled the loose change in the middle of the circle and fired a shot that appeared to be heading left of the cage. Horgan ultimately tipped it home near the left post, earning her fourth goal of the season.
ย
UMass goalkeeper Emily Hazard and the back line of the Minutewomen were successful in containing VCU's Emily McNamara who ripped five shots on the day. Hazard made a particularly key save on McNamara in the 59th minute to preserve her fourth individual shutout this season and first career clean sheet in the postseason.
ย
Kownurko logged six stops for VCU in the loss.
ย
Massachusetts had an 11-9 advantage in total shots, including an 8-2 edge in on-target attempts. The Maroon and White additionally finished with six penalty corners to VCU's four on the afternoon.
ย
UMass has now earned a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship Game in each season since 2012.
