No. 9 Northwestern Edges No. 24 Field Hockey in Double Overtime, 2-1

October 15, 2017 | Field Hockey

Kreusch forced extra session with a 69th minute equalizer.

EVANSTON, Ill. – Kirsten Mansfield scored off of a rebound in the 94th minute to lift No. 9 ranked Northwestern over No. 24 University of Massachusetts field hockey at Lakeside Field on Sunday afternoon.

The loss drops the Minutewomen to 11-5 on the season, while Northwestern improves to 12-4 overall.

Goalkeeper Emily Hazard logged a career-high 13 saves for the Maroon and White, while her counterpart, Annie Kalfas, had three stops in the victory for Northwestern.

The Wildcats came out firing in the first 11 minutes of the match, peppering four shots including two on goal. However, Hazard made the appropriate adjustments and turned aside both attempts. In the 22nd minute, Shauna Rankin-Byrne backed up Hazard with a defensive save to keep the match scoreless.

Massachusetts drew one penalty corner in the first stanza, but Northwestern subsequently foiled the threat.

NU then got on the board just before halftime with a Pascale Massey tally in the 34th minute, finishing a feed from Puck Pentenga.

As the second half progressed the Wildcats continued to pressure, drawing five more corners and registering five shots on goal, each of which were knocked down by Hazard.

With Hazard replaced with a kicking back late in regulation, UMass finally evened the score in the 69th minute after drawing a penalty corner. Lucy Cooper and Mirra Stillman immediately set up Melanie Kreusch for the equalizer, her seventh goal of the season.

UMass had opportunities to seal the match in both the first and second overtime periods, ripping five shots and earning three corners before Mansfield inked the game-winner for the Wildcats.

Penalty corners swung in favor of NU by a 12-6 margin, as did shots on goal (16-4).

UMass now returns home for its final three matches of the regular season, a stretch that begins Fri., Oct. 20 with a 3 p.m. tilt against No. 21 Saint Joseph's.
