Minutewomen fall 8-1 in road loss at the Huskies
STORRS, Connecticut - The University of Massachusetts field hockey program traveled to No. 1 nationally ranked Connecticut but was unable to slow the fast-paced Huskies offense in an 8-1 loss at the Sherman Family Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Connecticut (10-0 overall) scored the opening three goals of the game on strikes by Amanda Collins, Casey Umstead and Charlotte Veitner before the Minutewomen responded. Izzie Delario converted for the Maroon and White on a pass by Nicole Miller, which brought Massachusetts back within 3-1 of Connecticut in the 19th minute of action.
However, Veitner added her second of the contest in the 26th minute as the Huskies took a 4-1 advantage into the halftime break. Connecticut continued its scoring pace in the second half, led by two more goals from Veitner, who is the third-highest scoring player in the nation.
The Huskies led in shots, 22-9 with an 11-4 advantage in on-target attempts. Connecticut also earned a 6-2 margin in penalty corners. Emily Hazard made three saves in goal for the Minutewomen while Nina Klein had two for the Huskies.
Massachusetts (5-5, 1-0 Atlantic 10) returns to campus and resumes conference action with a Sun., Oct. 2 game against Saint Francis (6-4, 0-1) at 1 p.m.
