Second half scoring seals 3-0 victory over Saint Francis

AMHERST, Massachusetts - Second half goals from Izzie Delario, Sarah Hawkshaw and Nicole Miller secured the University of Massachusetts field hockey program a 3-0 victory over Saint Francis at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon. Miller had a three-point afternoon as she assisted on Delario's goal while Hailey Cockrum and Nicole Kuerzi also collected an assist each.

The Minutewomen improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 games with the victory while Saint Francis falls to 7-5 and 1-2.

Hawkshaw capped one of the six UMass penalty corners with her sixth goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. Cockrum fielded the insert and tapped play to Hawkshaw, who dribbled right, found space and sent a bouncing shot into the left side in the 42nd minute.

Miller doubled the Maroon and White lead in the 61st minute during a scrum play in front of the Saint Francis goal. Kuerzi sent it to Miller in front for a tip-in. Delario iced the game less than six minutes later with her sixth goal of the year. Miller forced play to the goal line and turned back to a trailing Delario five yards up-field. Delario calmly settled the pass and snuck a shot back through the Saint Francis defense for the three-goal advantage.

Massachusetts controlled possession and pace of play throughout the game to the tune of a 21-3 lead in shots, including an 18-1 margin in on-target attempts. The Minutewomen also had a sizable advantage in penalty corners, 6-1. Emily Hazard earned the shutout win with one save in net for the Minutewomen while Elizabeth Dyer turned aside 15 UMass shots.

The Maroon and White continue their season with a road trip to Commonwealth of Virginia. The Minutewomen first head to VCU (3-7, 1-3) for a Fri., Oct. 7 game at 2 p.m. before they move on to Richmond (5-6, 3-2) at Noon on Sun., Oct. 9.
