Dijkstra's Overtime Score Sends UMass To Victory

September 25, 2016 | Field Hockey

Minutewomen down No. 9 Boston College, 3-2

NEWTON, Massachusetts - University of Massachusetts field hockey junior Anne Dijkstra secured a 3-2 victory in overtime with her first goal of the season as the Minutewomen downed No. 9 Boston College on the road at the BC Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon. The win improved the Maroon and White to 5-4 overall while the loss dropped the Eagles to 4-5.

Dijkstra tallied in the 82nd minute when she caused a turnover in the Boston College half of the field. With UMass up one player due to a BC yellow card, Dijkstra pressed the Eagles' defense, stole possession outside the circle, created a one-on-one scoring situation and fired her shot by Eagles goalkeeper Audra Hampsch for the sudden victory.

Sarah Hawkshaw and Nicole Miller also scored for the Minutewomen while Izzie Delario had an assist. Emily Hazard preserved the win in the cage with four saves, including one in overtime.

Hawkshaw forced overtime when she equalized the contest at 2-2 with 15 minutes, 37 seconds to go in the game. Hawkshaw collected a deflected ball from the Boston College defense, went toward the endline and fired inside the goal corner for her fifth goal of the year.

Hawkshaw's conversion marked the second time the Minutewomen rallied from a goal down during play. After Lucy Lytle put in her first of two goals for the Eagles 23 minutes into play, Miller answered at the 27:52 mark with her 20th career tally. Delario began the play with a run down the left side before she passed to Miller in front for Miller's conversion.

Massachusetts led in shots, 20-14, including a 12-6 margin in on-target attempts. Penalty corners also favored the visiting side, 6-5. Hampsch finished with nine saves for the Eagles.

The Minutewomen continue the 2016 season with their third consecutive ranked foe as the Maroon and White make a trip to No. 3 Connecticut on Wed., Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. The Huskies visited Amherst earlier in the year and escaped with a 2-1 victory on Fri., Sept. 16.
