Field hockey scores 12 times in shutout victory
AMHERST, Massachusetts - University of Massachusetts field hockey posted the most goals in a single game in program history with a 12-0 shutout of the Saint Louis Billikens at Gladchuk Field on Friday. Ten Minutewomen combined for the 12 goals, led by three from senior forward Izzie Delario.
Nine of Delario's compatriots pushed across one goal apiece in Rachael Burchell, Hailey Cockrum, Hannah Farrell, Maggie Harrison, Sarah Hawkshaw, Celina Hocks, Grace Horgan, Nicole Miller and Haley Notarantonio. Miller contributed three assists for a five-point day while Delario topped all Minutewomen with her seven points, a personal record.
The Minutewomen improve to 3-3 with the win while Saint Louis drops to 1-5. It was the first Atlantic 10 game of the year for both teams.
Cockrum, Delario and Farrell scored in quick succession and gave Massachusetts a 3-0 lead by the eighth minute of play. Delario netted one only 27 seconds in while Cockrum scored at the four-minute, 52-second mark and Farrell followed at 6:20 with her first score of the year.
After more than 14 minutes of scoreless action, Harrison tallied her goal to push the lead to 4-0 before Delario and Hocks made it a six-goal lead at the break.
Scoring resumed only 38 seconds into the final half as Hawkshaw fielded a pass from Miller near the right post and tapped in her third goal of the year. Hawkshaw returned the favor to Miller just over a minute later when Hawkshaw found Miller open in front for the eighth UMass tally.
Delario secured the hat trick - her first collegiate - with a 42nd-minute close-range strike on a feed from Horgan. Burchell made it 9-0 for the home side with a reverse-stick shot into the right side of the cage only seven minutes later.
Burchell assisted Notarantonio on the 11th UMass goal as Burchell charged toward the cage and redirect a ball in front to Notarantonio on the left side of the circle. Miller slotted a pass to Horgan at the right post with three minutes, 36 seconds to go in the game for the record-breaking tally.
Meme Dawson took the loss in net for Saint Louis with six goals against as many saves made during the first half. Jessie Bryan closed out the game with three stops and six goals let in during the second half. Caitlin Gibson had a defensive stop for the Billikens.
The Minutewomen return the Gladchuk Field for a Sun., Sept. 18 game against Harvard at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
