Minutewomen drop 5-0 decision in final game of Wildcat Classic

DURHAM, New Hampshire – The University of Massachusetts field hockey team was unable to overcome Northwestern's quick scoring in a 5-0 loss to the No. 16 nationally-ranked Wildcats at New Hampshire's Memorial Field on Sunday. The loss drops UMass to 0-2 on the season while Northwestern improves to 1-1.

Northwestern made use of three goals in the opening 16 minutes of the game and built a 3-0 lead the Wildcats held into the half. Isabel Flans scored the opening tally in the third minute before Lily Katzman and Dominique Masters put in back-to-back tallies at the 13 minute, 59 second and 15:34 marks of play.

The Wildcats added their fourth goal of the game with just less than 32 minutes left in regulation on Elena Curley's sweeping score following a Sophia Miller pass. Flens later added her second of the tilt via a 59th minute conversion.

The Minutewomen generated 12 shots while starting goalkeeper Emily Hazard made six saves, but UMass was unable to rattle the back of the Memorial Field cages. Melanie Kreusch totaled four of those attempts while Sarah Hawkshaw had three and Celina Hocks added two.

Northwestern led in shots, 13-12 and shots on goal, 11-5. Corners favored the Minutewomen, 10-5. Hazard finished with six saves for the Maroon and White while goalkeeper Lindsay von der Luft tallied four stops for the Wildcats. Puck Pentenga added a defensive save for Northwestern.

The Maroon and White return to campus for their next contest, the home-opener against Columbia (0-0) at 1 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 2.

Due to traffic congestion associated with move-in weekend, fans attending the game are asked to travel into town via University Drive and park in Lot 22. A campus parking map is available at https://umts.github.io/ParkingMap/.
