Minutewomen Claim Top-Eight Finishes at Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. - University of Massachusetts women's track and field wrapped up the Larry Ellis Invitational Saturday with several top-eight finishes at the unscored meet in Princeton, N.J. The day's action saw freshman Emilie Cowan, junior Kelsey Crawford, sophomore Tatiyanna Sanders and the 4x100 meter relay lead the way for the Minutewomen.
Crawford placed fourth in shot put in a field of 21 competitors with a New England-qualifying toss as the Houston, Texas native threw 45 feet, 6.25 inches.
The 400 meter run saw Cowan take fifth with a time of 54.97 seconds, qualifying for New Englands. Caroline Leung ran 58.51 seconds for a 33rd-place finish in the event.
Sanders captured eighth in long jump with a leap measuring 17 meet, 10.75 inches. She was also in action with UMass' 4x100 meter relay team along with Melissa Beaupre, Cowan and Diamante Spencer. The squad combined for a time of 47.93 seconds, good for seventh out of 18 teams.
The Minutewomen's 4x400 meter relay team of Olivia Weir, Beaupre, Leung and Cowan finished 12th at 3 minutes, 55.37 seconds.
Weir also competed in the 800 meter run. The Wrentham, Mass. native was just shy of a New England-qualifying time, crossing the finish line in 2:16.67. Krista Webb came in 35th with a time of 2:20.92 and Anna Capps was 38th at 2:21.24.
Spencer ran in the 200 meter dash and qualified for the New England Championship with a time of 25.59 seconds, good for 24th in the event.
The 1,500 meter run saw Colleen Sands capture 19th with a time of 4:47.14. Brook Hansel was on her heels in 22nd, crossing the finish line at 4:48.04. Close behind was Deirdre Martyn at 4:48.40, taking 23rd. Alexa Livingstone rounded out the UMass finishers in 29th with a time of 4:52.53.
Samantha Allen placed 19th in 3,000 meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 53.24 seconds.
Sanders finished 51st in 100 meter dash at 12.95 seconds and Beaupre was 56th with a time of 13.10 seconds.
The Minutewomen are back in action Apr. 30 for the UNH Pre-Conference Meet, the final competition on the schedule before the Atlantic 10 Championship in Fairfax, Va. The meet will get underway at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in Durham, N.H.
