Singles Depth Paces Tennis in 5-2 Win Over Towson

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Depth in singles play proved the difference maker on Thursday morning as the UMass tennis team defeated Towson, 5-2, at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point. The win marked the third straight for the Minutewomen (8-6) who will take on Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon to close out their Spring Break trip.

UMass started the morning by winning the doubles point after Ana Yrazusta and Carol Benito earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 play and Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley won 6-4 at No. 2 play.

In singles, the Minutewomen took four of the six matches, but it was wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles that earned UMass the victory.

Woosley picked up a straight set win at No. 4 singles (7-5, 6-4), while Brittany Collens did so as well at No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-1). Benito took the win at No. 5 singles in three sets. She fell in the opening set, 6-2, before bouncing back to win the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-0.

Yrazusta rounded out the top performers with a win at No. 2 singles. After winning the first set, 6-2, she fell 6-3 in the second. The Las Palmas, Spain, native bounced back in the deciding third set, 6-1, to earn the win.

The Minutewomen and Buccaneers will conclude the week's play in Charleston on Friday, March 18 with the match start set for 2 p.m. In addition to extending the current three match win streak, UMass is looking to win its eighth of the last 10 outings.
