Tennis Wins Fourth Straight, 5-2, Over Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A trio of three-set victories in singles play propelled the UMass women's tennis team to its fourth straight win with a 5-2 decision over Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. The win concludes the Minutewomen's Spring Break trip to Charleston with three victories over the past four days.
Friday's match started with UMass (9-6) sweeping the doubles points to take an early 1-0 lead.
Charleston Southern (8-2) bounced back to start singles play picking up wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles to take a 2-1 lead.
The Minutewomen rallied back winning all four of the remaining singles matches to earn the win. Ruth Crawford (No. 1), Arielle Griffin (No. 4) and Ana Yrazusta (No. 2) all closed out three set matches to secure the win for UMass.
Crawford fell in her opening set, 6-2, before winning the next two 6-2 and 6-3. Griffin won her opening set at No. 4 singles, 6-4, but lost a tightly contested second set, 7-6. She quickly dispatched Kimberley Koerner in the third set, 6-0, putting UMass back up 3-2.
Yrazusta secured the deciding match point after splitting her first two sets and winning the third 7-6.
Brittany Collens rounded out the scoring with a three-set win at No. 6 singles. She won 6-3 in the first set before battling in a 7-6 set-back for the second. She closed out the win with a 6-2 victory in the third set.
Along with winning its fourth straight match, UMass has won eight of its last 10 outings. The Minutewomen will return to action at home on Saturday, April 2 when Fairleigh Dickinson visits the Bay Road Tennis Center. The match is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start.
