Collens Pushes Tennis Past College of Charleston, 4-3

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Junior Brittany Collens' three-set win at No. 6 singles proved the match winner as the UMass tennis team defeated the College of Charleston, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The match was the first of three this week during the Minutewomen's (7-6) annual Spring Break trip to Charleston, S.C. UMass will next take on Towson on Thursday, March 17 at 10 a.m., before facing Charleston Southern on Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m.
In Tuesday's match, UMass took the opening point with a pair of wins in doubles play. After Arielle Griffin and Laura Moreno quickly earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, the Cougars (11-5) evened the match start with a win at No. 1 doubles. Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley then earned a hard-fought 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles to give the Minutewomen the first team point of the match.
The Cougars took a 3-2 lead after picking up wins at No. 5, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Crawford picked up UMass' second team point with a three-set win at No. 2 singles. The Minutewomen were able to tie the match 3-3 with a three-set win by Ana Yrazusta at No. 1 singles.
After falling in the first set of her No. 6 singles match, Collens then bounced back to for a 6-1 win in the second set and clinched her match and the team win with a 6-4 victory in the tie-breaker set.
