Minutewomen Capture Top Spot at URI Coaches' Tribute Meet

KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Massachusetts women's track and field took first in a field of 11 teams at the URI's Coaches' Tribute Meet on Saturday. Individual first-place finishes and program top-five marks helped the Minutewomen amass 168.5 points on the day.

Kelsey Crawford's performance in shot put broke the school record for the second straight week. In the 500 meter run, Emilie Cowan bumped her standing to second all-time in the UMass record book. Heather MacLean had a first place in the 800 meter run which improved her ranking to 15th in the nation and was just shy of beating her own school record.

In shot put, Crawford posted a new program record for the second straight week, earning first place with a 46 foot, 6.25-inch throw, once again meeting the ECAC and New England qualifying standards. Margaret Riseborough claimed second place with a New England-qualifying toss of 41 feet 10.5-inches and Nathalie Irmer took seventh at 40 feet, 2.75-inches.

MacLean was just shy of breaking her program record in the 800 meter run as the junior ran 2 minutes, 7.90-seconds, out-pacing the second-place finisher by 8.25-seconds. The performance bumped her ranking to 15th in the nation for the event. Olivia Weir had a New England-qualifying finish at 2 minutes, 17.13-seconds to claim fourth. Sofia Pitouli nabbed seventh at 2:19.5. Renee Capps was close behind in eighth with a 2:21.34 finish.

Cowan claimed victory in the 500 meter run at 1:13.07 and is now second all-time in UMass history. Caroline Leung took fifth at 1:18.83 and Mary Lavery was right at her heels, finishing sixth at 1:18.93.

Colleen Sands led the field in the 3,000 meter run. She nabbed first with a New England-standard of 10 minutes, 1.60-seconds. Molly McMahon was fourth at 10 minutes, 34.92-seconds. Christine Davis crossed the line right behind at 10:35.54, enough for fifth.

UMass' 4x400 meter relay `A' team of Leung, Lavery, Pitouli, and Alexa Livingstone won the event with a time of 3 minutes, 53.36-seconds. The `B' team of Mia Kamara, Charlotte Robison, Gulino and Grace Kelly claimed seventh at 4:13.04.

Brittany Green finished fourth in 60 meter hurdles at a New England-qualifying 8.92-seconds. Meghan Patrolia also qualified for the New England Championship with a seventh place, 9.12-second finish.

In the 60 meter dash, Jada Lofgren-Anderson had a New England-standard 7.87-second run to take fourth. Diamante Spencer claimed eighth at 7.96-seconds.

In the 200 meter run, Spencer was back in action, finishing fifth at 25.91-seconds. Lofgren-Anderson placed eighth at 26.03-seconds.

Gulino also raced in the 400 meter run, taking second with a time of 59.78.

In the mile run, Carly Zinner had a New England-qualifying third-place finish at 5 minutes, 2.03-seconds. Livingstone claimed sixth with a 5 minute, 6.47-second performance.

Brook Hansel took on the 1,000 meter run, finishing seventh at 3 minutes, 6.93 seconds.

The UMass distance medley `A' team of Zinner, Lavery, Pitouli, and Livingstone claimed second with a 12 minute, 18.39-second performance. Hansel, Julia Witt, Bridget Deveau, and Capps ran 12:53.49 to take fifth as the `B' team.

In long jump, Tatiyanna Sanders had a New England-qualifying leap of 17 feet, 11.75-inches to claim second. Deveau came in sixth at 16 feet, 10.5-inches and Robison nabbed 8th at 16 feet, 5.25-inches.

In high jump, Katie Osbourne earned fourth at 5 feet, 3.25 inches and Witt leapt 5 feet, 1.25 inches, enough for sixth.

Triple jump saw Meg Rhodes claim fifth at 34 feet, 3.5-inches. Kelsey Barnes scored in the pole vault with a 10 foot, 10-inch leap, good for fifth, and Kayla Rorke nabbed seventh at 10 feet, 4-inches.

Riseborough captured third in the weight throw at 50 feet, 10.75-inches and Crawford threw 50 feet to take sixth .

The next full meet for the Minutewomen will be the Atlantic 10 Championship, back in Kingston, R.I., on Feb. 20-21, while several individuals will head to Boston next Fri., Feb. 12, to run in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
