Minutewomen Take Third at New England Championship

BOSTON - University of Massachusetts women's track and field celebrated record-shattering performances at the New England Championship this weekend in Boston, Mass. Those performances by members of the Minutewomen helped the team to a third-place finish at the meet, held at Boston University, with 71.75 points.

Junior Heather MacLean broke a 28-year-old New England Championship record set in 1988 by Genesia Eddins of 2:07.07 in the 800m and improved upon her own UMass program record with time of 2:05.00. Redshirt junior Kelsey Crawford's shot put performance was enough to set a new school record and freshman Emilie Cowan improved upon her own school record the 400m. Cowan's performance in Friday's preliminaries broke the previous UMass record set by Lee Ann Ambrose Kelly in 1990.

MacLean won the New England title in the 800 meter run as the Peabody, Mass., native's 2 minute, 5.00-second run improved upon her previous record of 2:07.24, set at last season's New England Championship. Freshman Mary Lavery grabbed seventh in the event at 2 minutes, 13.80-seconds.

Crawford won a New England championship in the shot put with her 46 foot, 6.75-inch throw, besting her previous school record by half an inch. Margaret Riseborough claimed seventh with a 41 foot, 8.75-inch throw.

Cowan ran 54.24 seconds to a silver medal in the 400 meter run, improving upon her record-breaking preliminary time of 54.41. Another freshman, Olivia Weir, claimed first in the 1,000 meter run with a personal record of 2:53.32 to win her first New England championship.

Colleen Sands is celebrating a personal record in the 3,000 meter run as her time of 9:48.81 landed her in third. Alexa Livingstone took sixth in the event with a personal record of 9:57.87.

Jada Lofgren-Anderson nabbed third in the 200 meter dash at 25.04-seconds.

The UMass 4x800 meter relay team of Lavery, Sofia Pitouli, Carly Zinner, and Weir ran 9 minutes, 19.91-seconds to claim sixth. The 4x400 relay team of Bridget Deveau, Lofgren-Anderson, Caroline Leung and Cowan were seventh with their combined time of 3:52.34.

In high jump, Gabrielle Bennett claimed sixth at 5 feet, 3.25-inches. She also scored in the 60m hurdles, placing seventh at 8.90-seconds.

The Minutewomen are back in action on Mar. 5 for the ECAC Championship in Boston, Mass. Events are slated to kick off 10:00 a.m.
