Tennis Wins Fourth Straight With Doubleheader Sweep

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The UMass tennis team pushed its current win streak to four consecutive matches after defeating Army, 6-1, and St. Bonaventure, 7-0, on Saturday at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Minutewomen improve to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 after the pair of wins.

In the morning match against Army, the Minutewomen posted their second complete match sweep of February.

UMass earned the doubles point to start the match as both the No. 1 pair of Carol Benito and Ana Yrazusta and the No. 2 pair of Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley each won 6-3.

In singles play, both teams were evenly matched, despite the final score, with five-of-six going to tie-breaker sets.

Yrazusta and Benito each bounced back from first set loses to win at No. 1 and No. 6 singles. Crawford and Woosley both won in three-sets after falling in the second set of their respective No. 2 and No. 4 matches.

Aarzoo Malik won the only match of the day decided in straight sets winning the No. 3 match, 6-3, 6-2.

In the afternoon match, UMass swept all three doubles matches and five singles matches. The Minutewomen picked up a win at No. 6 singles by default.

Crawford won at No. 1 singles, while Yrazusta picked up a win at No. 2 singles.

Woosley, Laura Moreno and Brittany Collens took straight set victories at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. UMass also earned a team point at No. 6 singles with St. Bonaventured defaulting.

The Minutewomen will return to action next Friday, Feb. 19 at Yale. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start.
