Former Minuteman Brandon Montour Makes NHL Debut

December 29, 2016 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – Former Minuteman defenseman Brandon Montour became the 14th alum of the University of Massachusetts hockey program to reach the National Hockey League, dressing for the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night for the squad's game against the Calgary Flames in Calgary, Alberta. Montour, who played at UMass in 2014-15, is the fourth Minuteman in the past two seasons to make his NHL debut, joining Frank Vatrano (2013-15), Conor Sheary (2010-14) and Joel Hanley (2010-14).

Montour, the highest draft pick in UMass history, who was selected by Anaheim in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft (55th overall), has had a blistering start to his professional career since signing with the Ducks in March 2015. In 107 career regular season AHL contests with the Norfolk Admirals and the San Diego Gulls, Montour has amassed 88 points on 20 goals and 68 assists. In 25 games this season with San Diego, he has logged 21 points (7g, 14a) and leads the AHL in shots (113), while ranking sixth in scoring among the league's defensemen.

Montour joined the Minutemen at the conclusion of the 2014 fall semester and saw action in 21 games in 2014-15, totaling 20 points on three goals and 17 assists, including six multi-point efforts. He logged a career-high three assists in UMass' five overtime victory over Notre Dame in the Hockey East Tournament. In Hockey East play Montour appeared in 12 games and had 12 points on two goals and 10 assists, helping him earn Hockey East All-Rookie Team recognition.

The Ohsweken, Ontario native's 20 points were the most by a rookie defenseman in UMass' Hockey East era and his .95 points per-game average trailed only All-American Thomas Poeck's 37 and 41-point junior and senior campaigns.

In his first full month of college hockey, Montour led UMass with 10 points in eight games in January 2015 on two goals and eight assists, including four multi-point showings, and posted an even rating to earn Hockey East Rookie of the Month recognition. Seven of the defenseman's 10 points came in special teams situations with a goal and three assists on the power play and a goal and two assists shorthanded, factoring in all of the squad's three shorthanded tallies on the month.
