November 29, 2016 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Athletics has selected Maggie Mulligan and Donte Clark as its Student-Athletes of the Week for Nov. 21-27.
Â
Mulligan, a junior from Boston, Massachusetts, had a career week in leading women's basketball to a 2-0 record with wins over Central Connecticut (76-37) and Merrimack (73-44). The junior averaged 24 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game while shooting 51.4 percent (18-of-35) from the floor and 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the free throw line. Against CCSU, Mulligan had a career-high 33 points on 14-of-18 shooting and grabbed 12 boards while blocking five shots. The 33 points were tied as the fifth-most for a single game in program history. She added 15 points and 15 rebounds on Sunday in the win over Merrimack where she also blocked a pair of shots. The pair of double doubles give her five for the year which currently leads the Atlantic 10.
Â
Clark, a junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, scored 29 points (6-15 FG, 4-8 3FG, 13-14 FT), had five rebounds, two assists, a block and one steal in Saturday's men's basketball 70-66 victory over Harvard. Clark scored 22 of his 29 points during the second half and had 18 of the final 22 UMass points during a span where Massachusetts went from trailing 51-48 with 8:18 to play to winning 70-66. In that span, Clark was 3-for-3 from the floor – all three-point attempts – and 7-of-8 at the foul line. The Minutemen went in front for good with three minutes, 44 seconds to go in regulation thanks solely to Clark's offense. After a Siyani Chambers three-pointer extended a Crimson lead to 54-50, Clark answered with back-to-back triples as he provided the entire team's scoring during an 11-2 run that turned the four-point gap into a 61-56 advantage at the 2:30 mark. He tracked down his lone missed free throw for an offensive board with 11 seconds to play in the game as UMass ahead, 66-64. After Harvard fouled Clark again, he stepped to the line for two more free throws and sank both for a four-point lead.
