MASSACHUSETTS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Redshirt senior wide receiver Bernard Davis provided his longest career catch via a 70-yard touchdown in the first quarter that posted the Minutemen to a 6-0 lead. Davis' previous best was 19 yards against Mississippi State on Sept. 24, 2016. It was his third career touchdown catch.
  • Steve Casali produced his his fourth career game of 10+ tackles as Casali earned 12 takedowns, including six solo stops. Casali is the leading tackler among Minutemen on the season entering the final week with 96.
  • Colbert Calhoun forced a fumble on BYU quarterback Taysom Hill via a nine-yard sack, which led to Davis' 70-yard TD reception only three plays into the next UMass drive.
  • Logan Laurent converted a 44-yard field goal in the second quarter. Including the game at BYU, Laurent now 17-of-25 all-time on field goal attempts. He ranks sixth all-time at UMass in field goal percentage (.680), tied for eighth in made field goals and 10th for field goal attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bernard Davis put the Minutemen on the board with a catch-and-run through the BYU secondary for a 70-yard score. Mike Caggiano missed the extra point as UMass held a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Ā Ā
  • BYU responded with a K.J. Hall 11-yard rushing score only seven seconds into the second quarter. After the Cougars drove into the redzone as the first quarter came to a close, Hall found paydirt on the first play of the next frame for a 7-6 BYU lead.
  • Logan Laurent pushed UMass back in front with a 44-yard field goal with 12 minutes, 58 seconds to go before halftime. Isaiah Rodgers set up the drive with a 51-yard kickoff return that started UMass at the BYU 48 yard line while Adam Breneman extended the drive with a 26-yard reception over the middle to the BYU 20.
  • The Cougars responded with just over five minutes to go in the half on a five-yard Harvey Langi rushing score through the middle of the UMass defense. Langi's touchdown put BYU back in front, 14-9, a lead the home side held into the break.
  • BYU adjusted at the half and controlled tempo and outcome the remainder of the way as the Cougars scored 37 points following the break and kept Massachusetts out of its first half offensive rhythm en route to a 51-9 victory for the home team.Ā
