New Hampshire Skates Past Hockey, 4-1

THE BASICS:
RESULT: New Hampshire 4, Massachusetts 1
LOCATION: Mullins Center (Amherst, Mass.)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (2-3-0, 0-1-0 HEA); New Hampshire (2-3-0, 1-0-0 HEA)
THE LEAD: A pair of power-play goals helped carry New Hampshire past the University of Massachusetts hockey, 4-1, in the teams' Hockey East opener on Friday night at the Mullins Center. The Wildcats opened the scoring late in the first period and sealed the result with a pair of third period goals.
FIRST PERIOD:
In the first, UMass' fourth line produced a pair of early chances from sophomore Ryan Badger and junior Riley McDougall, but it remained a scoreless game until 16:04 into the stanza. On UNH's second power-play opportunity of the night, Michae McNicholas fired home a one-timer from a cross-ice pass by Tyler Kelleher.
SECOND PERIOD:
The Wildcats then pushed their lead to 2-0 in the opening minutes of the second period. Brendan van Reimsdyk set up Liam Blackburn's tally from the slot with a pass below the goal line at the 2:59 mark. Patrick Grasso earned an assist on the play, as well. Freshman Shane Bear cut the deficit in half for the Minutemen at 13:54, burying a shot from the point on the power play off a feed from sophomores Ivan Chukarov and Austin Plevy.
THIRD PERIOD:
UNH went on to seal its victory with two goals in the final stanza. Dylan Maller's wraparound just 52 seconds into the frame gave the Wildcats back their two-goal cushion. Shane Eiserman later completed the scoring with a power-play goal from Ara Nazarian and Marcus Vela 9:30 into the period.

- Bear netted his first collegiate goal in the contest, becoming the fifth member of UMass' freshman class to score a goal through the team's first five games of the season.
- New Hampshire finished the night with a 31-27 shot advantage. Freshman Ryan Wischow (2-1-0), making his fourth start of the season, totaled 27 saves, while Danny Tirone registered 26 stops for the Wildcats.
- UMass won 36 of 61 faceoffs (59%) on the evening, led by senior Steven Iacobellis' 14-for-21 (66.7%) effort over the dots. Freshman Griff Jeszka and sophomore Ryan Badger were 8-for-14 (57.1%) and 6-for-7 (85.7%), respectively.
