Men Third, Women Fourth After Dartmouth Invite Day One

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - After the first day of the Dartmouth Invitational, the UMass women's swimming and diving team sits in fourth place, while the men's team finished the evenings events in third.

Both the Dartmouth's men's team and women's team hold the top spot entering Saturday's competition. Through 10 events, the Big Green men posted 357.5 points, while the women's squad scored 367 points. The UMass women finished the night with 194.5 points and the men recorded 258.5 points.

The meet opened with the 200 freestyle relay as the Minutewomen took fifth and the Minutemen took third in the event.

In women's action, Meriza Werenski placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:09.57) followed by Jocelyn Yuen in fifth place (2:10.67).

In the 50 freestyle, Cassie Sosnovich tied for eighth with Dartmouth's Grace Herron as both sprinters touched in 24.86 seconds.

Other top performers included Katie Orr in the 500 free who placed ninth followed by Steph Campo who took 11th. Rebecca Quirie and Sydney Connor both scored points in the 200 IM placing ninth and 10th, repsectively, with a difference of just 0.25 seconds between their touches. Ansley Baker also scored points for the Minutewomen with the 14th-fastest time of the day in the 50 free.

For the men, Alex D'Anna placed fourth in the 200 IM (1:57.37) just two seconds off his season best time. Kyle Stefanides took seventh in the event with a time of 1 minute, 58.61 seconds.

Owen Wright had the highest individual finish of the day taking second in the 50 free with his time of 20.90 seconds - just 0.36 seconds off his personal best mark.

The Minutemen picked up a total of 62.5 points in the 50 free as Wiktor Karpinski and Brian Stiles placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Alex Mesisca, Alex D'Anna tied for ninth, while Kellen Gray rounded out the scorers with the 16th fastest time of the night.

In the 500 free, UMass saw three Minutemen finish in the top-10 as Eric Pauls took sixth (4:41.92), Alessandro Bomprezzi placed seventh and Kyle Vieira finished ninth.

Both the men's and women's 400 medley relay teams placed fifth to close out the evenings events.

The Dartmouth Invitational will continue on Saturday with the first session of swimming events beginning at 10 a.m. and the afternoon session set for 2 p.m. at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center. The diving competition will start at 11 a.m. at the Karl Michael Pool on the Dartmouth campus.
