UMass My Summer: Brittany Collens - Tennis
July 30, 2015 | Tennis
This July and August, UMass Athletics' summer features series, UMass My Summer, is checking in with some of the Minutemen and Minutewomen who are proving that there's no such thing as "down time" for a student-athlete. These individuals are all using their summer months to better themselves with internships, volunteer work or athletic competition. For our fifth installment, we caught up with UMass tennis' Brittany Collens who recently worked the USTA Junior Sectional Championships.
UM: Tell us a little bit about the USTA Junior Sectional Championships.
BC: It was a five-day tournament where they top juniors in New England compete against each other. It's also a tournament that is recognized on a national level so they can gain points towards their national rankings.
UM: How did the experience relate to your planned career path?
BC: This really helped me gain experience in my major since I was the one to kind of organize it and run all the media operations. I interviewed players, wrote features and daily recaps for the tournament.
UM: What did you get out of the experience?
BC: This experience was great because it helped me realize how much work really goes into all positions of covering an event. It really made me use my time wisely and get used to fast deadlines.
UM: What did the experience teach you about yourself?
BC: I learned that I really love talking to athletes and interacting with them more than anything. Being on camera and interviewing is one of my favorite things to do. I do love writing feature stories as well!
UM: What was you favorite part about the experience?
BC: My favorite part of the entire experience was probably getting to know all the athletes and making them feel special or recognized for their hard work. It was really fun to see how excited they were when they I asked them to do an interview!
