Yrazusta, Benito 4th In ITA Regional Doubles Rankings

AMHERST, Mass. - Following an outstanding 2014-15 campaign, the UMass women's tennis doubles duo of junior Carol Benito (New Delhi, India) and freshman Ana Yrazusta (Las Palmas, Spain) received the highest regional ranking of any pair in program history on Wednesday. Benito and Yrazusta were ranked 4th in the final ITA Northeast Regional Rankings after helping guide the Minutewomen to an appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship title match this past Spring.
The previous best ranking for a UMass tennis doubles duo was sixth for Chantal Swiszcz and Yuliana Motyl following the 2012-13 campaign.
Benito and Yrazusta posted a 27-6 overall record including an 18-3 mark at No. 1 doubles. The pair won 10 straight matches before falling in the A-10 title game to close the season. The 27 wins also marked a single-season program record for wins in a season.
Both were named to Atlantic 10 All-Conference squads following the season. Benito was named to the A-10 Second Team, while Yrazusta was named to the A-10 First Team and was the A-10 Rookie of the Year.
For the Minutewomen, the play at doubles this past season was a strength of the program. Only five times in 22 dual matches did UMass not win the opening doubles point.
Each also had success in singles play this past season. Benito, who transferred in last fall from Tulsa, posted 22 wins at No. 2 singles. Yrazusta and sophomore Anna Woosley (West Sussex, England) each had 24 wins which are tied for the second-most wins in a single-season.
Overall, UMass finished the year with a 17-5 overall record marking the second-most wins for a season in program history. The Minutewomen reached the Atlantic 10 title match for the second time in the last four seasons. In each of those years, UMass has finished as semifinalists or better in the championship tournament.
