UMass Hockey Alumni Postseason Update

AMHERST, Mass. - Seven UMass hockey alumni are currently in the midst of postseason runs in the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs and the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs, with AHL Conference Semifinal action kicking off tonight. The Minutemen are guaranteed to have at least one alum representing UMass hockey in the Calder Cup Finals this year as all four teams remaining out of the Eastern Conference have have former Minutemen on their rosters.

The Eastern Conference Semifinals will see Steve Mastalerz's Manchester Monarchs square off against Conor Sheary's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins beginning with Game 1 tonight in Manchester, N.H. at 7 p.m. Sheary was the hero of the Penguins' series-clinching Game 3 victory over Syracuse in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals as he posted a three-point night with two goals and an assist, including the game-winning tally.

In the other Eastern Conference Semifinal, Casey Wellman's Hershey Bears will take on Conor Allen, Mike Kostka and the rest of the Hartford Wolf Pack in a best-of-seven series that kicks off in Hershey, Pa., tonight. Wellman registered a hat trick and added an assist for a four-point night to help Hershey down Worcester, 10-5, in the deciding Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

Two more UMass hockey alumni, Rocco Carzo and T.J. Syner, are battling it out in the ECHL's Pacific Division Finals, the second round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Carzo's Ontario Reign currently lead the series against Syner's Utah Grizzlies, 2-0. Thus far this postseason, Syner has two goals and four assists for six points over eight games, while Carzo has three points (2g, 1a) in nine contests. The teams will meet for game three tonight in Utah.
