AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts hockey program has signed 6-2, 198-pound defenseman William Lagesson to a National Letter of Intent, Head Coach John Micheletto announced on Wednesday. Lagesson is the seventh member of the Minutemen's freshman class for 2015-16, joining Carmine Buono, Ivan Chukarov, Kurt Keats, Austin Plevy, Nic Renyard and Joseph Widmar.
"A physical two-way defenseman who can produce offense as well as deny offensive opportunities for Hockey East opponents, William will certainly be a leader amongst our defensive corps moving forward," said Micheletto.
Lagesson, a 2014 fourth round NHL Draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers (91st overall), has dressed for Team Sweden in 65 international contests between the U16, U17, U18 and U20 levels. This past winter, he competed in the 2015 World Junior Championships where he helped Sweden to a 4-0 record in the preliminary round and an appearance in the Bronze Medal game. In 2013, Lagesson was a part of the Gold Medal-winning Team Sweden at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
He has played in over 100 Junior A games between Sweden's J20 (Frölunda) and the USHL. In 2014-15 as a member of the Dubuque Fighting Saints, Lagesson appeared in 52 games during the regular season and totaled 16 points on two goals and 14 assists.
