April 21, 2015 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts hockey program and Head Coach John Micheletto have announced that 6-2, 190-pound left shot defenseman Carmine Buono of Burnaby, British Columbia, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Minutemen. Buono will come to UMass in the fall of 2015 as a member of the Class of 2019, joining Ivan Chukarov, Kurt Keats, Nic Renyard, Austin Plevy and Joseph Widmar.
"A big, physical two-way defenseman, Carmine's 91 penalty minutes were second overall in the BCHL," said Micheletto. "He played for three-time BCHL Coach of the Year Kent Lewis as a member of the Powell River Kings."
As a rookie this past season with the Powell River Kings of the British Columbia Hockey League, where he was a teammate of fellow incoming UMass hockey freshman Keats, Buono totaled 26 points on two goals and 24 assists over 48 games. In 13 playoff contests, he dished five assists.
Buono was selected to participate in two prestigious tournaments this season, as he skated in the World Junior A Challenge as a member of the Canada West squad and the 2015 CJHL Prospects Game. He is ranked #188 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting and is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.
